I’m going to show you how to create a quick and simple survey actually using Google Drive. Now you could use something like Survey Monkey to build an online quiz or survey – it’s an excellent tool and has it’s place. But if you do have Google Apps, or you have access to Google Drive, you can create a very quick and easy survey form that will filter into a spreadsheet for you using Google Drive Forms. So let’s look about how that is done. So here I am logged into Google Drive and I’m going to create, from this menu, a form. It’s going to open up the page, it’s going to ask me a couple of things.
So there is a lot going on here but let’s just start with a really simple things. So let’s create our new form. Now let’s suggest that we’re going to survey users about what they had for breakfast. And you can put a little bit of an introduction in there and then we can add some questions. So let’s start with this first, we’re going to ask for some check boxes and in the check boxes we’re going to go for eggs, we’re going to add bacon. In some cases we might actually need the user to tell us what else because we might have missed it out. So we can add an other option, we actually do want them to answer these questions so we’re going to click done. Alright so we might want a second question, so we click edit on this one. We can add a number of things.
We can add text, we can add some paragraph text so they can put a longer answer, you can do multiple choice which are radio buttons which means only one answer can be selected, as opposed to the check box above. We can choose from a list so we can create the same list, but in this case it’s going to be a drop down so they can only select one. And we can do a scale so we’re going to go from 1 to 10 and 1 is going to be freezing, and 10 is going to be as hot as the sun. Again make that required.
So now the user can say well I want it all the way up here as hot as the sun. What else have we got? We’ve got a grid as well. So grids really good for a number of questions that come together into a scale as well. So this might be, and then we can go add in HP, barbeque and tomato. And we can make that a required question. And now that gives us, the user can go oh I love HP, not quite so keen on barbeque and the tomatoes my next best. So that’s a quick overview of how you create a form. Now, once you’ve done that it’s actually really easy to have a look at. So we can just click the link at the bottom here, that’s going to load another tab and there we go, that’s your form. And just that easy to take that same link and share it with other people around the web.
So let’s look, quickly, at the sharing piece as well. We can select a theme if you like, put a design around it the default theme is usually plenty enough. And we can also have a look at the responses. So we can open the spreadsheet and you can see here a number of columns, that gives us that we require, so that once people have filled it out, we can find the results. Okay now if we go back to Google Drive, what we’ll see now is we’ll have a form called what did you have for breakfast? So we can now open that, there’s our spreadsheet and if you want to go back to the form where you want to find it for people, you can click form and edit form. There is our form, click the link to open it up. Let’s fill that out so let’s go with bacon, bacon, we like hot coffee, HP is the favorite, barbeque not so much and then tomato and we’ll hit submit.
And there it is, the user’s now submitted the form. So if we close this and come back to the spreadsheet, you can see now I’ve got all the different answers for that survey. So you might want to add in an email field or something so you can actually identify the user depending on what your survey is all about. So there you go. A very quick and easy way of creating a survey and getting some good data out of it using Google Drive.
