Google announced that Gemini AI will no longer be sold as a USD$20/month add-on but be included with Google Workspace – effective immediately. Let’s go through the press release and investigate the changes.

Why are Google doing this?
Gemini is saving users over 100 minutes a week on average, and 75% of users say it is helping in their daily work.
Integrating Gemini to Google Workspace brings a significant differentiation from the competition by having AI included in the plan, not as an optional upgrade, simplifying the ability to access AI tools.
This reflects the way the world will be moving forward, with AI integrated and part of the standard toolset. Google has a distinct market advantage as it owns and develops both of these tools. Microsoft has had to partner with OpenAI to bring these tools to their productivity suite, and today still costs USD$20/user/month. I expect this move to influence Microsoft, and we’ll see them follow suit within months.
We’ll also see some significant changes in Google Workspace and watch it pull ahead of the competition this year being able to leverage their full stack capabilities.
2025 promises to bring more tools to Google Workspace at a rapid pace, building upon the very fast implementation schedules we saw in 2024 across the tech industry.
What’s the financial implication?
There will be a price rise with Google Workspace. Gemini was a bolt-on at USD$20/user/month, and this is changing with that add-on no longer available from January 16th 2025. Pricing in your local currency will be similar – in our announcement video we look at the full breakdown based on information available.
When do we see changes?
Every Google Workspace account will start to see Gemini throughout their account immediately at no extra cost if you are on an annual commitment plan. You will see the price rise as your annual commitment comes around after 17th March 2025.
Does every Google Workspace plan get all the features?
Business/Enterprise Starter plans will, as with other features have a slightly restricted integration. NotebookLM Plus will be available in Standard and above. Frontline editions will not change, and receive no Gemini AI features.
Gemini Language availability has been a topic of conversation as it has been limited, but Google says they have 45+ languages available and are committed to full global language compatibility in 2025.
I’m paying for Gemini already!
Come February 1st you will stop paying for Gemini as a separate payment, so you will be saving close to USD$18/month/user.
Can I opt out of the upgrade?
No. Google are moving with the way the world is going and democratising the use of AI and getting it to everyone in the easiest, lowest barrier of entry way.
In our opinion, this was going to happen at some point, and we are very glad to see that the price reduction has been recognised as a barrier to access these powerful tools.
